Governmental Agencies

There are several government agencies involved in the regulation of the transportation field. The largest of the agencies is the Federal Department of Transportation (or its counterpart in foreign countries.) The Federal Department of Transportation (or DOT as the U.S. entity is also known) is further divided into administrative sections. Each administrative section is responsible for a specific area. For example, in the U.S. we have the following sections: the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Research and Special Programs Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Surface Transportation Board, etc., just to name a few. Each section has its rules and regulations that govern specific aspects of the transportation field.

At state levels you also find state departments of transportation, departments of motor vehicles, departments of motor carrier safety, law enforcement agencies, boards of equalization, etc. As it is with the Federal government, each entity has its own filings, registrations and permits covering different aspects of the transportation field.

In dealing with so many government agencies, the overall picture of legal requirements imposed upon any transportation entity can become very complex. It takes a sharp mind and a lot of know how in order to understand and comply with all the regulations for any particular situation dealing with transportation.

Lawyers are for courts and BTC is for the transportation industry.
